After our interview with Paradox's CEO I'd hoped that new internal QA department would smooth out some of these disappointing problems, but it look like there's still some work to be done. If Dungeonland is anything like Magicka, though, it might be much better in six months. Do you ever check back on buggy games later?
We asked Joe Fricano, Producer of Dungeonland at Critical Studio, a few questions about the PC game to get to the heart of what makes the title so appealing. Perhaps the biggest surprise is the gameplay is more arcade like, more like a Gauntlet game and less like Torchlight or Diablo.
Joe Fricano Dungeonland supports up to 4 players simultaneously and you can pretty much set it up any way you want to. 1-3 players take control of the Heroes and try to beat the various theme park-levels, which are controlled by the Dungeon Master. The unique aspect of Dungeonland is that the Dungeon Master can be controlled by a player as well, so you have a situation where 3 players are fighting against 1 - much like in a lot of popular board games like Descent or Mansions of Madness. If you want, you can set it up as 1vs1, where one player controls a Hero, one controls the DM and the A.I takes care of the remaining two heroes - any combination is possible. If you want to play solo as the Dungeon Master or a Hero, that's fine too. It's actually one of the most open setups I've ever seen in a game.
JF Yes! You can set up a game locally over a network, over the internet or on just one PC. (However, if someone is playing the Dungeon Master and someone else a Hero, you need at least two PCs since they have separate interfaces. The Heroes can all play on the same screen.)
JF: Dungeonland is more of an old-school arcade game similar to classics like Gauntlet and as such, there is no "story" in the sense of an ongoing narrative. There IS a lot of characterization in the game though and the Dungeon Master himself is an ever present entity taunting you as he sends his minions to halt your progress.
It's always a little ominous when the lowest difficulty setting available in a game is 'Hard'! Don't be fooled; this isn't just a subtle tweaking of expectations by renaming a relatively easy mode - Dungeonland will make you suffer. But then Dungeonland wasn't designed to be easy; nor was it intended to be played alone.
Cast a glance over the screenshots below and you may come to the impression that Dungeonland is your run of the mill third-person dungeon crawler riding on the coattails of DiabloIII / Torchlight 2et al. Whilst basic gameplay follows the norms of the genre, Dungeon Maestro mode is what really sets the game apart (but more on that later).
Cast aside any pretence of a plot as the game - the first from Brazilian developers Crucial Studios - throws you into the titular Dungeonland; a theme park filled with a variety of creeps and traps. Players take control of one of a party of three heroes battling through the park for riches/glory/miscellaneous other unspecified reasons. Should you find yourself short of friends to make up the numbers, any unfilled slots will be taken up by AI companions, although you wouldn't want to rely on them.
Most of your gold (along with the majority of the enjoyment) will be plowed into the aforementioned Dungeon Maestro mode, whereby a fourth player takes the role of Dungeonland's nefarious owner. Stylized to represent a traditional tabletop RPG, the DM selects a number of monster and trap cards prior to the start of the level; these are then drawn from a deck during the game and played in an attempt to thwart the heroes' progress. Any available gold can be used to unlock different cards to fill your hand.
The game ships with just three levels, each split into two stages with a boss at the end of the second. Two of these levels are predetermined, with just the monster spawns varying per playthrough, whilst the third, also used for DM mode, is semi-randomised and comprised of a series of tiled board pieces to fit with the tabletop theme. A fourth map is teased on the level select screen, but there is no indication as to whether this will be added via a patch or DLC.
As a game to play as a purely single-player experience (not that it was ever intended to be one), it's probably one to miss; but get a group of friends on comms, trading insults back and forth in Dungeon Maestro mode and you've got one of the best examples of asymmetric multiplayer we've seen in recent years.

That being said, when firing up Dungeonland for the first time, one might be immediately stricken with a sense that the game is a bit light on features. But this is the type of game that opens up the more time players spend with it. For example, at the start of the adventure, there are only three character types to choose from; however, over time, as players lay waste to minions and collect the coins they drop, they can then spend the acquired currency to unlock new sub-classes. Even outside of these character jobs, there are new items, weapons, armor and the like to unlock and equip as well, making this the type of experience that encourages replaying stages over and over to get the most out of it.

There are thousands of parts to collect which enhance the overall gaming experience. The different types of parts include enabling the customization of several character aspects, including body parts, armor, weapons, facial features and coloration. The hero remains recognizable but customisable. To buy and equip the loot or buy upgrades, DNA is necessary, used as a currency. DNA helixes can be collected during gameplay, dropped sometimes by slayed Darkspores or destructible objects, or obtained by selling pieces of loot.
HelpEDNA was a Darkspore alternate reality game that went online in mid-2010. It plays out as a puzzle text adventure which gives clues about the Darkspore game, and is set before the events of the game.

The online servers of the game were shutdown permanently on March 1, 2016. The game is no longer playable, even by illegal methods. The move attracted criticism, with Techraptor stating that the failure to migrate away from the always-online requirement before the server shutdown was tantamount to «banishing the title from gaming history.» 781b155fdc
