Q:
I just had an adult son die of a broken heart. His girlfriend just dumped him, he had all his happiness in life and then without any warning she changed her mind. It was like he was hit by a bus. It's been a month now and he is still in a hole. He won't eat, doesn't go out or do anything at all. He was a bright, happy person, he just suddenly became a shell of himself. He is a very talented artist, he really did love her but he never had the guts to tell her he was unhappy because he thought if she left him it would hurt him too much. He just sat at home and he was so miserable and I tried to get him to see a doctor or talk to a psychologist but he would just laugh it off as the silly things teenagers do. I just don't know what to do or what to say. He feels so sad and I feel so guilty because he is a very kind and gentle person and I feel he has been suffering all this time for me. We don't have any money for a funeral because we were just starting to save for our trip to Australia to see his brother graduate from university. I can't get him to eat or go out or do anything at all. I can't bear to see him like this and I miss him so much but I can't think of what to say to him. He has never said anything like this to me before. What can I do?

Thank you for sharing this.
With all due respect, your description of your son's state is almost exactly what people who have been diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder describe.
The funny thing is, I'd bet he is/has been depressed. (Just not the depressive kind.)
When I meet a client who is going through such a struggle with a loved one, I start by asking them if there is something in their life that is making them unhappy. Even if it is just the one thing.
It can be a job, a relationship, an addiction.
Then I ask them if there is something about that thing that is troubling them. Because of their own personality and the way things are usually, they can only see things from their point of view.
They can't see the situation from the outside, as if we were looking at it from above, from some objective perspective.
